In this synthesis of nearly 30 years of research on marine fish breeding (turbot, Scophthalmus maximus; sole, Solea solea; bass, Dicentrarchus labrax and sea bream, Sparus aurata) we present the main results acquired during the three periods devoted (1) to establishing zootechnical bases of marine fish breeding in general, theme 1, (2) to developing compound feeds adapted to young stages and optimising the feeds for juveniles, theme 2, and finally (3) to studying the impact of environmental factors on the growth capacity of sea fish juveniles, theme 3. Some references relating to the preliminary work on sea fish farming are given at the end of the report as well as, for each stage of this research, articles considered as the most important. The... |

Brazilian chelonians belong to the following families: Testudinidae (tortoises), Chelidae, Emydidae, Pelomedusidae, Kinostemidae (turtles and terrapins). Many species belonging to these families are kept in domestic captivity and need appropriate management, including nutrition provided by feed formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of each species. By doing so, one can prevent several diseases induced by inadequate management, such as the frequent shell deformities and vitamin deficiencies, especially those regarding vitamin A. The need to preserve these animals as well as their ecosystem is also stressed. |

Three methods of division of Melipona quadrifasciata Lep. colonies were evaluated: fisogastric queen naturally mated; orphans colonies, and queen mated in laboratory. Out of six colonies, five had grade 7 in 221 days, reaching 83,3% of success, in the 1st method. Out of four, 100% were formed using the 2nd method, in 221 days, and 71,4% out of seven colonies were formed with grade 7 in 195 days using the 3rd method. All colonies were treated with Syrup-A; the same management and same system of evaluation. Colonies obtained were described performance by the following mathematic models: Grade1 = 1.202 + 0.262 x reading; Grade2 = 1.474 + 0.250 x reading and Grade3 = 1.406 + 0.287 x reading. The 3rd method was the best considering time of the colonies... |

Mathematical models can be used to improve performance, reduce cost of production, and reduce nutrient excretion by accounting for more of the variation in predicting requirements and feed utilization in each unique production situation. Mathematical models can be classified into five or more categories based on their nature and behavior. Determining the appropriate level of aggregation of equations is a major problem in formulating models. The most critical step is to describe the purpose of the model and then to determine the appropriate mix of empirical and mechanistic representations of physiological functions, given development and evaluation dataset availability, inputs typically available and the benefits versus the risks of use associated with... |

Based on Coulter Counter data, a new method is proposed to study the influence of the polymorphous variability in size as well as in shape of the diatom species Skeletonema costatum on the physiological performances of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum . Three conditions are required in order to convert volumetric data determined with the Coulter Counter into metric data, i.e. (1) stability of the pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, (2) statistical independence between length and pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, and (3) negligible level of coincident passages through the aperture orifice. Under these three conditions, the mean length (l) of a S. costatum chain can be related to the mean pervalvar diameter (d) of diatom chains and to the... |

Um... |

Feeding and growth of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas is simulated by a deterministic model. However, physiological processes, estimated by statistical relationships, have not been tested under extreme environmental conditions such as high level of suspended particulate matter. Ecophysiological experiments were therefore conducted in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron during a spring and neap tide cycle in May 1991, to get a better representation of 2 important components of the energy budget of the Japanese oyster: clearance rate and selection efficiency. The relationships previously established by Raillard et al. (1993) are re-evaluated by integrating the action of high seston load, typical of tidal effect within estuaries, on the physiological... |

The gut content of 495 specimens of Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, 131 of F. paulensis (Penaeidae) and 102 of Macrobrachium acanthurus (Palaemonidae) were analyzed to establish the composition of their diets F. brasiliensis had as the most important feeding items in its diet larvae of Chironomidae, Polychaeta and Heleobia australis (Mollusca). For F. paulensis, the most important items were the same as for F. brasiliensis, but the order of importance of H. australis and Polychaeta was inverted. M. acanthurus had detritus as the most important item, followed by Chironomidae larvae, Odonata nymphs, and fragments of the macroalgae Chara. The results showed that the three species were omnivorous, with a varied diet including both components of macrofauna of... |

ABSTRACT The genera Iguana and Ctenosaura belong to the Iguanidae family, and populations of most species of these genera have decreased due to anthropogenic effects. The natural history of most species of this family is poorly known, including Ctenosaura similis. Therefore, this study documents some ecological aspects of the species, such as its feeding habits, and habitat and microhabitat use in a population of Isla Contoy in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The data showed that even though C. similis is distributed throughout the island, individuals more commonly use human construction (buildings) of Parque Nacional Isla Contoy (PNIC) and mangrove areas. Microhabitats most used by all age classes and sexes were rocks and trees. The diet of the species is... |
